Oil System Tune-Ups and Conversions

Oil heating? No problem, here at Owens.

If you own an oil fired furnace or boiler, you know it should be “tuned-up” or serviced every year. It is the nature of oil that the burner, nozzle, oil filter gets dirty and even clogged up in just one season.

Owens Companies has the largest and most experienced crew of technicians trained in oil in the Twin Cites! They are a dying breed, but not at Owens! We are providing on-going training to the next generations to make sure you will never be left out in the cold.

Is it time to convert your oil heating system to clean burning natural gas?

If you answer “Yes” to any of these questions, you owe it to yourself to get a conversion quote from Owens on a new Home Comfort System:

  • Would you like to save 40%-50% on your energy cost next heating season?
  • Are you thinking about selling your home within the next 7 years?
  • Do you have a natural gas water heater, gas stove, or gas clothes dryer?
  • Is your furnace or boiler more than 20 years old?
  • Would it be easier for you to make monthly fuel payments rather than pre-pay for the season?
  • Is your carbon footprint important to you?

How much money will I save?

At current prices, your fuel-cost savings alone could pay for your new Home Comfort System in as little as five years. But your savings really depend on your personal use, how complicated making the switch is in your home, and the future price of fuel.

The most efficient gas-burning furnaces are quite a bit more efficient than the most efficient oil-burning furnaces.

So, your energy use will certainly be less, but predicting the future price of fuel is difficult. Most natural gas is mined in North America and many believe its pricing is more stable than oil, which is a global commodity. Once your home has natural gas service, you can also convert your other appliances — such as your oven, stove, hot water heater, and dryer — to gas, which will save you even more in the long run.

Switching to gas provides more than just a cost benefit. Natural gas is more environmentally-friendly and provides a cleaner form of heat that’s better for the health of your family.

How much will the equipment cost?

Gas-powered heating systems cost less than comparable oil furnaces and boilers. A high energy-efficient gas furnace will cost between $3,500 to $5,500 for gas compared with $4,500 to $10,000 for oil. Gas powered heating systems also require much less maintenance saving you even more every year.

If you plan to sell your home, a new high-efficiency natural gas furnace is a common requirement of many home buyers. The investment in switching from oil to gas will improve the attractiveness of your home, as well as your selling price.

What other expenses are involved?

If you do not have a natural gas line supplying your home, you will also need to install an underground pipe from the gas main to your home. This cost depends on how far away your home is from the gas main. Often, the utility company will pay for all or part of this expense to get you as a new customer.

Switching to gas may also require changes to your current furnace chimney. A new high-efficiency furnace is typically vented through an outside wall instead of through the chimney. If your water heater exhausts through the same chimney as your old furnace, a liner may need to be installed in order to allow the chimney to properly draft.

Lastly, you’ll need to remove your old oil system. Most communities in our area require the removal of the old oil tank. The cost is dependent on whether your oil tank is above or below ground and accessibility. We can help facilitate your tank removal.

What does a conversion entail?

In a typical conversion, Owens provides a turn-key installation for you. We will:

  • Coordinate installation of the natural gas line with the utility, if necessary
  • Removing your old furnace or boiler
  • Replace it with a new, high-efficiency gas furnace or boiler
  • Make all necessary connections
  • Inspect and certify
  • Check the draft on the old chimney and install liner, if necessary
  • Remove the old oil tank
